Employees who work in Voorhees but don’t live in the township may want to take a hard look at relocating, as township representatives announced last week it had enrolled in the state’s “Live Where You Work,” program.
The New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency’s “Live Where You Work,” program offers potential homebuyers a home mortgage incentive program that provides low-interest mortgages and other perks for literally living where they work.
LWYW partners with area real estate agents and banks to offer attractive mortgage rates, flexible loan-application reviews or underwriting criteria, and down-payment and closing-cost assistance of up to 5 percent of the mortgage amount.
Mayor Michael Mignogna said the program would be a boon for people who work in the township and are looking to move into Voorhees.
For more information on LWYW, please visit the state’s Web site at state.nj.us/dca/hmfa/consu/buyers/close/live.html.
See this week’s print edition of The Sun for the full story.

By ROBERT LINNEHAN | The Voorhees Sun
Voorhees elementary students should plan to spend a few more days in their schools at the end of June, as the district will be forced to extend its school year by at least four more days because of weather-related school closures.
Coordinator of Elementary Programs Irene Afek said the district has missed four days of school since December.
In December the district missed a day and in February the district was forced to close its schools three more times, she said, the latest being Friday, Feb. 26.
The most the district has missed in a year was 11 in 1996. In 1996 the district was forced to close the doors of its schools 11 times because of snow and ice.
There are currently no snow days built into the school district calendar, Afek said.
All four days will have to be tacked on to the school year at the end of June. Some school districts will make up missed days during their spring break, but the board has always stuck by its same policy, Afek said.
“Our advertised policy on the yearly calendar states that the school will extend the year. That’s what has been advertised on our calendars through the last eight years. The last time we added days was in 1996 when we had 10 or 11 snow or ice days. That was a very difficult winter, we had to be more creative,” she said. “We’ve missed one day in December and three so far in February.
“We were closed last Friday, early dismissal on Thursday. It’s the first early dismissal we’ve had in years.”
Hopefully the district won’t lose any more days in March, Afek said.
Afek said residents and students should check in with the district’s Web site at Voorhees.k12.nj.us. to see if any changes to the schedule are made in the future.

By ROBERT LINNEHAN | The Voorhees Sun

The Alicia Rose “Victorious” Foundation will continue its work to help sick teenagers feel comfortable during hospital stays by hosting its sixth annual wine tasting event on Thursday, March 11 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Barry Brown Health Education Center on the Campus of Virtua Hospital, 106 Carnie Boulevard in the township.

The event, which is well attended each year and predicted to attract 200 visitors this year, will feature wines from around the world provided by Canals Discount Liquor Mart, Berlin, and lagers and ales from Victory Brewing Company, Allied Beverage Group, and others. Visitors will also be treated to food from ChopHouse of Gibbsboro, Zallies ShopRite of Berlin, Milano Foods of Mt. Laurel, and Classic Cake of Cherry Hill.

Tickets cost $75 and can still be purchased at the door before the event. Giselle DiNatale, creator of the foundation, said the money raised from the event will go toward purchasing more teen kits for local hospitals and also support the cost of some special events that will be held in January of next year.

“Certainly the funds also go to the teen kits that we provide to each of the hospitals. We’re hoping to be able to purchase over 500 of these kits, which we will be giving to the New Jersey hospitals and CHOP of Pennsylvania,” she said.

The teen kits cost about $100 each, she said, and contain items chosen to help teens be more comfortable during their hospital stay.

Each year the event typically raises more than $30,000 for the foundation, Program Coordinator Liz Horvitz said.

DiNatale formed the Alicia Rose “Victorious” Foundation, a group dedicated to improving the lives of local teenagers in hospitals who are struggling with life-threatening illnesses. The foundation installs teen lounges in pediatric hospitals as a refuge for teens undergoing treatment for their illnesses.

Her daughter, Alicia Rose, was diagnosed with cancer in September of 2001 and passed away 10 months later in October of 2002. She spent the majority of her time in the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, but she and her mother both realized the hospital didn’t have much social programming developed for teenagers.

It was here that the seeds for the “Victorious” foundation were planted.

The first lounge was developed and built at CHOP in 2003, DiNatale said, and the next year four more lounges were built. Now, the Alicia Rose “Victorious” Foundation has built 51 lounges across the country, eight lounges of which are here in New Jersey.

The lounges usually contain video game consoles, televisions, movies, and generally provide common areas for teens to meet with family and friends during their stays.

To learn more about the event and the foundation, please visit the Web site at Victoriousfoundation.org. Call 856-784-0615 for more information as well.

A new attraction for area homeowners makes its debut March 12 to 14 when the Virtua Flyers Skate Zone hosts the South Jersey Home Show, the first showcase for home improvement specialists to be held in the Camden-Burlington region.
Produced by MAC Event of Spring Lake, the show offers the latest design ideas, products and services to make every home more livable.
The end of a long winter and the waning grip of the recession are motivating many homeowners to plan spring remodeling projects.
Finally, they can visit a home improvement event right in their own backyard.
“In the past these shows were typically held on the other side of the river in Philadelphia,” says Claudio Oliveira, general manager of the Skate Zone. “This is an exciting new event and a lot of local businesses have committed to the show. We think it will appeal to our customers and local residents.”
Why visit a home show? It’s the ideal way to meet a wide array of home renovation professionals without spending precious free time on appointments with individual businesses.
There’s no substitute for a face-to-face discussion of your specific project, and the show puts nearly 200 of the region’s best companies under one roof.
Here’s where you’ll find remodeling contractors, bath and kitchen specialists, landscape architects and patio installers.
Other exhibitors focus on desirable add-ons like sunrooms, home theater systems, hot tubs and pools, custom cabinetry and new window treatments.
The recent decline in home sales means that more homeowners are improving, not moving.
The show is perfectly timed since industry experts see brighter prospects ahead for the remodeling industry, with an up tick in business predicted in the first half of this year.
According to recent studies, two-thirds of American homes are now at least 25 years old and in need of upgrades.
Nearly half of all homeowners polled want to remodel a kitchen or bath and another third hopes to add one or more new rooms to their homes.
Rising energy costs are driving demand for products that boost efficiency – state-of-the-art windows and doors, high efficiency heating and cooling systems and solar panels figure in this growing segment of the remodeling industry. The answer to heightened consumer interest is the show’s Green Zone where many of these products are on display.
Here’s a sample of what else is on tap from exhibitors:
•South Jersey Home Show at Flyers Skate Zone Hi Fi Audio-Visual Sales – Check out the 100-inch Epson projector TV, a system that puts the “theater” in home theater. Custom media installations are a specialty.
• Distinctive Woodwork – Order beautiful custom cabinetry for the home, including library shelving, media centers and wall units. On display at the show is a hand-crafted bar designed for entertaining.
• Custom Windows by Robert A. Kline – Find creative drapery treatments for windows of all shapes and sizes by one of the area’s top designers.
• Bath Saver – Revitalize baths with a new finishes and custom inserts or by converting tubs to walk-in showers, ideal for older homeowners with limited mobility.
• Sea Bright Solar – Tap the power of the sun to lower energy bills. A design-install firm that specializes in residential solar panel arrays.
Show hours are 1 to 9 p.m. March 12, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. March 13 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 14 at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone, 601 Laurel Oak Road Voorhees. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 to 17. Kids 11 and under are free and seniors can enter for $6 on March 13 only.
Two-for-one adult admission Friday and Saturday, after 5pm.
Call (800) 332-3976 or visit MacEvents.com for more information and discount coupons.

By ROBERT LINNEHAN | The Voorhees Sun
An incumbent candidate retained her seat on the fire commission, and the Voorhees Fire District saw its 2010 budget passed by an extremely slim margin last week.
The budget – which proposed no increase in the tax levy rate from 2009 – passed by a vote of 367 to 344.
It features no increase in the 2010 fire tax, Fire Chief Jim Pacifico said. The fire tax rate will remain at 12.4 cents per every $100 of assessed property value.
Before the election, Fire Commissioner Bob Dougherty described the budged as fiscally responsible and urged residents to vote in its favor.
The budget, he said, maintained the level of services Voorhees residents have come to expect from the fire district while not raising fire taxes.
Dougherty thanked voters for supporting the 2010 budget and said he and the commissioners were looking forward to another year of service.
“We are just very happy that our budget was passed. The voters came out and supported our budget with no tax increase,” he said. “I’d like to thank all the voters who came out and supported us. We’re looking forward to this year.”
Residents also made the fire commissioner election close, as incumbent candidate Elizabeth McAvoy defended her seat against candidate Carmen Console, winning by the slim margin of 30 votes. McAvoy received 374 votes to Console’s 344.
McAvoy – a 15-year incumbent – and Console – who served on the commission from 2006 to 2008 – both challenged for one three-year seat on the Voorhees Fire Commission.
Maintaining fire district services and keeping costs down will be a challenge for the district in the future, McAvoy said.
“I want to thank all the people who were so supportive of me. I’ve been there 15 years, and our plans right now are to begin construction for the new Kirkwood fire house. Getting our budget passed was so important,” she said. “Right no we can’t hire any new people because of the economy, but perhaps moving into next year we’ll be able to. We’re very thrilled the budget was passed, and we’re very fortunate to have our volunteers and paid employees.”
McAvoy stressed that the fire district cannot be frivolous during this period of the economy.
McAvoy will be sworn into her seat on Thursday, March 4.
For additional information, please visit the Voorhees Fire District Web site at voorheesfire.org.

By ROBERT LINNEHAN | The Voorhees Sun
Committee members said they were dismayed last week to find that cleanup efforts for the nearby Paint Works facility in the borough of Gibbsboro were far off.
Environmental Protection Agency representatives told the committee that a complete cleanup of the contaminated Paint Works facility is about 10 years away.
Owner Sherwin-Williams shut down the nearby facility in 1978 after serving as a paint factory in the borough since 1852, when it was originally created by John Lucas and his father Joseph Foster.
It was called Lucas Paint Factory and was sold to Sherwin-Williams in 1930.
Township Administrator Larry Spellman said the site has long been contaminated from its many years of paint production and the EPA has been researching and monitoring the land for several years.
It has tested the area for contaminants, formulated a plan, and is now planning to monitor the area closer for a few more years before a cleanup is attempted, he said.
“As I understand, it was an old paint factory in Gibbsboro. The downtown was quite a thriving area and it was all owned by Sherwin-Williams,” Spellman said. “It went out of business and people didn’t know back then how dangerous some of that paint could be.
“They dumped all the lead, some other contaminants into the creek. Here we are still talking about it years later.”
The pollutants extend into Kirkwood Lake, Spellman said, so township representatives have long pushed the EPA and Sherwin-Williams to clean up the site as quickly as possible.
Committee Member Harry Platt said the presentation was disappointing, as the EPA has been working at the site for many years.
“We’re a little upset about the time frame. We’ve been working on this for 20 years before it’s going to be mediated. I know with my own personal experience with the Buzby Landfill, it takes a long time,” he said. “They’re doing everything they can, but I wish they’d show some urgency because of the level of contamination we’re dealing with here.”
Spellman said the township would keep pushing the EPA to accelerate their plans and keep Voorhees informed of the clean-up process.
